The INM's Summer School presents, The World Can't Wait: Making Poverty History through Global Citizenship - A lecture by Kumi Naidoo, Secretary General of CIVICUS

    MONTREAL, Aug. 22 /CNW Telbec/ - On August 23rd, in collaboration with
Oxfam-Québec, the Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM) will present a lecture by
Kumi Naidoo, Secretary General of CIVICUS (World Alliance for Citizen
Participation), an international alliance of civil society organizations
dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the
world.
In 2000, all Member States of the United Nations adopted the Millenium
Development Goals (MDGs), a set of concrete, realistic objectives created to
find solutions to extreme poverty by 2015. Yet in 2007, the MDGs are not on
track: poverty is still growing, especially in Africa. In response to our
governments' failure to act, close to 40 million ordinary citizens around the
world have joined in the Make Poverty History campaign to demand that
something be done. As a leader of this international movement, Kumi Naidoo
stresses the importance of global mobilization, especially among youth, to
bring an end to poverty. To him, young people are the key players in this
mission and should be the driving force behind global action.
As a teenager, Kumi Naidoo was an activist of Nelson Mandela's African
National Congress. He fled South Africa in his early twenties and only
returned in 1994 for the first democratic elections of the country, during
which he played a key role. As Secretary General of CIVICUS, Mr. Naidoo
continues to advocate for what he believes in by advancing the interests of
NGOs and other civil society organizations. He was also chosen by the United
Nations' Secretary-General to join the Panel of Eminent Persons on UN-Civil
Society Relations. Today, CIVICUS has more than 1000 members in 110 countries.
