The Grande Bibliothèque Receives a Prestigious Architecture Award

MONTREAL, April 17 /CNW Telbec/ - Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du
Québec (BAnQ) is proud to announce that the Grande Bibliothèque has recently
been selected as winner of the one of 2007 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards,
presented jointly every two years by the American Institute of Architects and
the American Library Association. These prestigious awards celebrate the
finest examples of library design. The Grande Bibliothèque, conceived by
Patkau/Croft-Pelletier/Menkès Shooner Dagenais architectes associés, is one of
nine projects singled out this year for their harmony and beauty.
The jury members had this to say about the architecture of the Grande
Bibliothèque: "At once urban, human scaled, and extraordinarily open, the
building succeeds by its exquisite use of materials and detailing both inside
and outside. There is a peaceful, tranquil feel that provides a welcome
contrast to its grand urban gesture, masterfully executed. The architects were
at the top of their game."
The 33,000-square-metre space of the Grande Bibliothèque is home to two
major collections: the Collection nationale and the Universal Lending and
Reference Collection, housed in two chambres de bois (wooden rooms) - a name
inspired by the title of a novel by Anne Hébert. Visitors gain access to the
collections via an architectural promenade, which leads them from one level to
the next and takes in a number of reading "terraces" that offer views over the
city. Users may also reach their destination in one of the glass-fronted
elevators or by mounting the monumental staircase located in the central

10,000 people take advantage of its vast resources and enjoy its calm
