The Generations Pact: students united for change

MONTREAL, March 19 /CNW Telbec/ - Youth Action Canada and Consortium
Evolution, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sustainable Development,
Environment and Parks, the RJCCQ, Oxfam-Quebec, Sierra Youth Coalition, and
the Regroupement national des conseils régionaux de l'environnement du Québec,
are pleased to announce the Generations Pact tour, a series of conferences to
be held at 10 universities across Quebec from March 26th to April 3rd. This
initiative was announced during a press conference today at Concordia
The Generations Pact conferences will deal with student mobilization and
sustainable development. Guest speakers, commonly referred to as "the
ambassadors," include Dr. Hubert Reeves, astrophysicist and chairman of the
ROC League; Dr. David Suzuki, environmentalist and founder of the David Suzuki
Foundation; Laure Waridel, eco-sociologist and author; Jean Lemire, biologist
and head of Antarctic Mission; Andrée-Lise Méthot, founder of Cycle Capital
Management; Steven Guilbeault, official spokesperson - Equiterre, and Désirée
McGraw, authorized spokesperson for Vice President Al Gore's Climate Project
in Canada. The closing gala will be held at the Biosphere on April 3rd, and
will bring together the Government of Quebec, the Quebec universities (student
representatives and administration), as well as economic, social,
environmental and political actors.
After organizing a conference with Nobel Prize winner Al Gore and
Dr. David Suzuki in March 2007, Concordia University students spearheaded a
campaign to create a "sustainable action fund" on campus - which now amounts
to just over $150,000 per year for sustainable initiatives on campus. Inspired
by this endeavour, as well as by student-led initiatives to counter global
warming, the Generations Pact aims to establish a unique collaboration between
the Government of Quebec and the university student community.

Youth Action Canada, Consortium Evolution, as well as the ambassadors of
the Generations Pact, kindly ask the Quebec population to support this project
by signing the Pact online at: Each person,
individually - and in collaboration with the government - must act and change
while there is still time to prevent major environmental and climactic
