The Côte-des-Neiges - Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Borough has the First Green Roof on a City Building

MONTREAL, June 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Inauguration ceremonies were held this
morning for the first green roof accessible to residents on a city building.
This "green" initiative, a remarkable example of innovation and commitment to
sustainable development, was built on the roof of the Côte-des-Neiges Maison
de la culture and Library. The Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (CDN-NDG)
borough is the first borough to carry out a project of this kind. The event
was attended by CDN-NDG Borough Mayor, Michael Applebaum, Montréal Mayor
Gérald Tremblay, some one hundred guests, media representatives and borough
"The CDN-NDG borough is proud to be the first borough to create a green
roof on a city building. This accomplishment has generated a great deal of
interest from all quarters. We hope that the green roof on the Côte-des-Neiges
Maison de la culture and Library is the first in a long series of such
initiatives that will inspire other boroughs and other municipalities," noted
Mr. Applebaum.
"What a wonderful initiative by the borough and our experts. More and
more, we feel that Montrealers have a shared concern for the environment, here
as in the rest of the world. That's why the idea of a green roof is important
- it is a concrete way of helping the environment, greening the city and
supporting biodiversity," said Mr. Tremblay.
It was time to replace the roof on the building housing the Maison de la
culture and Library, and the borough saw this as a perfect opportunity to make
some "earth-friendly" renovations. The roof was suited to this kind of
structure, and the teams from the borough and the city and elected CDN-NDG
officials made this original project possible. Repairing the existing roof and
adding the green roof called for investment of $680,000. The city and the
Société de verdissement de Montréal also contributed $25,000 and $30,000
toward the educational aspects of the project.
The general design of the green roof and deck (landscaping,
waterproofing, irrigation and security systems, etc.) was a joint project by
the CDN-NDG borough and the city's Direction des immeubles. Professionals from
the city developed the expertise required and worked together to carry out the
entire project.

    Integrating culture and the environment

To mark the inauguration of the green roof, the CDN-NDG Maisons de la
culture and libraries will be presenting a very special program of
exhibitions, performances, installations, documentaries, photo displays,
lectures and youth activities, entitled Cultivating Culture - Even on the
Roof! all summer long. The focus will be on green roofs, naturally, as well as
greening the city, ecology and the environment.

N.B.: The fact sheet for the green roof and photographs of the event are
          available on request.
