TELUS investing more than $250 million in Quebec this year

Investment focused on leading broadband infrastructure

    MONTREAL, June 11 /CNW/ - TELUS today announced a 2009 capital plan
investing more than $250 million in Quebec. The investment is focused
primarily on advanced wireless and wireline broadband infrastructure and
includes healthcare related technology and applications. This investment is
supporting more than 750 jobs.
Since 2000, TELUS has made more than $6 billion in capital and operating
investments in the province.
Work is currently underway to build TELUS' next generation wireless
network, using advanced mobile broadband technology. TELUS expects to launch
the new network, based on the latest version of a technology known as High
Speed Packet Access (HSPA), in Quebec and nationally, by early 2010. This
investment is expected to ensure an optimal future transition to long term
evolution (LTE) technology, the emerging worldwide standard for fourth
generation or 4G networks.
TELUS' broadband wireline investment focuses on supporting new business
and government contracts in Quebec, enabling more organizations to access
leading edge connectivity, collaboration and network services that can improve
the efficiency and competitiveness of their business. The extension of new
broadband services creates significant benefits and opportunities in the areas
of healthcare, education and economic development.
"We are excited about the opportunities that our investment of more than
$250 million will create for our communities, our customers and our economy,"
said François Côté, executive vice-president and president of TELUS Québec and
TELUS Health Solutions. "Broadband and wireless technologies are essential to
our province's future competitiveness, and are key to advancing its healthcare
and improving patient outcomes for its citizens. Our more than 5,000 team
members and 1,200 retirees here are proud to be part of building a better
future for Quebecers."
Since 2000, TELUS and its team members have contributed more than $10
million and 140,000 volunteer hours to charitable and community organizations
in Quebec. The Montreal Science Centre, the National Theatre School of Canada,
Marine Biotechnology Research Centre Foundation, Boîte à Science and the
Mental Illness Foundation are just a few of the more than 340 Quebec
charitable and non-profit organizations that TELUS has supported over the past
nine years.
This summer, Quebec will also host the 2009 TELUS World Skins Game at La
Tempête Golf Club in Lévis on June 22 and 23, in support of Opération Enfant
The capital investment disclosed in this release is consistent with
TELUS' overall capital expenditure guidance for 2009.
