TD donates $750,000 to promote professional development in healthcare
MONTREAL, May 29 /CNW Telbec/ - Two healthcare professionals at the
Jewish General Hospital (JGH) have been chosen to receive one-year TD Grants
in Medical Excellence from TD Bank Financial Group. A JGH clinical nurse
specialist and an ophthalmologist have each been awarded a fellowship to
advance their education at McGill University to enhance the quality of the
clinical care they provide to patients. These are the first two TD Grants in
Medical Excellence that are being awarded to the hospital annually-two per
year for eight years-with a total value of $750,000. TD Bank presented the JGH
with funds for this year's grants in a ceremony at the hospital on May 28.
"Investing in healthcare facilities, research and providing professional
development opportunities is the key to retaining and attracting the best
medical talent. We should ensure that more of tomorrow's leaders in healthcare
and groundbreaking research will come from Canada," said Alain Thibault,
Executive Vice-President, Insurance, TD Bank Financial Group. "Supporting our
healthcare professionals will make a difference in the future of our
communities and have a positive impact in Canada's hospitals. "
TD has been investing in medical practitioners at hospitals and
healthcare facilities across Canada since 2000 through the TD Grants in
Medical Excellence program. At community hospitals, the program funds courses
and conferences for nurses and other practicing caregivers to maintain or
upgrade their skills. At Canada's university research hospitals, the program
also funds post-doctoral fellowships to help ensure that doctors at the top of
their field have access to funds for research.
The medical recipient, Dr. Jorge Sahr, practices in the Department of
Ophthalmology and is pursuing a one-year retina fellowship at McGill. Dr. Sahr
says the TD grant will provide him with an opportunity to gain "excellent
clinical and surgical experience that I will be able to apply to my work in
public and university hospitals."
Christina Clausen, the nursing recipient, specializes in Women's Health.
She is studying toward her PhD at McGill, exploring nurse-physician
partnerships within a healthcare setting.
Lynne McVey, JGH Director of Nursing, expressed her gratitude to TD Bank
Financial Group for "its generous support of the education of nurses, which
helps us achieve our goal of quality nursing care for all." Ms. McVey, an
Associate Professor at McGill University's School of Nursing, added that
recent research studies in nursing have found that "mortality rates and
complications of illness are significantly reduced by teams in which 60
percent of nurses hold university degrees in nursing. These findings are
especially significant during a time of global shortages of nurses."
