Taking a leap of faith for kids with facial disfigurements

    TORONTO, Aug. 20 /CNW/ - On Saturday, August 23, 2008, a group of
dedicated volunteers will set aside their blackberries and take a "leap of
faith" for AboutFace. This brave group of individuals will jump out of a
"perfectly safe plane" to raise awareness and money to support the AboutFace
Camp Trailblazers for kids with facial disfigurements. Volunteers will begin
jumping at 10:30 am from Skydive Burnaby, Wainfleet, Ontario
(Niagara-on-the-Lake region).
The idea for such an event began with a local Scotiabank Mortgage
Development Manager, Susan Danychuk. She shared her skydiving experience with
other Scotiabank leaders and soon the concept of hosting a skydiving event was
initiated. "I know it takes a lot of courage to jump out of a plane. I
realized that it takes a lot of courage for these kids to go to school every
day and to live normal lives," says Danychuk. "I am jumping for the kids and I
want to help make a difference in their life by giving them the opportunity to
go to Camp Trailblazers." Scotiabank has contributed $134,000 to AboutFace
since 2004.
"This is our first annual skydiving event and we hope it will grow into
an annual fundraiser for AboutFace," says Anna Pileggi, Executive Director,
AboutFace. "These skydivers are mortgage specialists and business partners who
want to make a difference in their community," says Pileggi. "Self esteem is
at the core of one's determination and drive to succeed. As a key partner,
Scotiabank is working with AboutFace to build self esteem and confidence in
kids with facial disfigurements so that they too can dream and succeed," says
"This is an incredible opportunity for members of our mortgage sales team
and their colleagues to build team spirit, have fun and raise funds for a very
important cause in our community," says Sharon Fitzpatrick, Managing Director,
Scotiabank, National Mortgage Sales. "We are taking a "Leap of Faith" to help
AboutFace and Camp Trailblazers as they provide a safe and accessible
environment for our youth. We invite the community to come out and join the
fun on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm." For more details on the event, go to
    Leap of Faith will help raise awareness and funds for Camp Trailblazers;
a unique place for youth ages 10-17 with facial disfigurements. Camp
Trailblazers is hosted by AboutFace, a national organization based in Toronto,
working to change the attitudes and stigmas associated with facial
disfigurements. This year they hope to sponsor 100 kids in four provinces.
"Living with a facial difference is a social disability, as others make
judgments on individual abilities and virtues based solely on their outer
appearance," says Pileggi. Camp Trailblazers provides kids with facial
disfigurements with a safe place where they can experience the great outdoors;
explore group and team dynamics; and discover their own abilities and
capacity. Best of all, kids create life long friendships with others who share
similar experiences.
