Take 5 Productions and Phase 4 Films join forces to launch new television development company

Joint venture to be led by Brett Burlock

TORONTO, Sept. 6, 2011 /CNW/ - Building on the success of its recent Gemini and Emmy nominated series THE TUDORS, THE BORGIAS and CAMELOT, and current production WORLD WITHOUT END, Take 5 is embarking on a new venture to develop Canadian content with an eye to the international marketplace.   Over the past 24 months, Take 5 has successfully co-produced 47 hours of episodic television with production budgets totaling in excess of $200 million.   As Take 5 continues to build its production volume, the company will expand its reach outside of production and into the content creation arena.

The new company, Take 5 Development, is a strategic partnership between Take 5 Productions, Phase 4 Films and industry veteran Fred Fuchs.   The new venture will be led by Brett Burlock, who most recently served as Vice President of Development at CTV, where he was instrumental in the critical and ratings success of the network's original production slate, which included FLASHPOINT, THE BORGIAS, THE BRIDGE and THE LISTENER.

While the company is primarily interested in one hour scripted dramas, it is currently considering additional genres to develop a diversified slate.  "Irrespective of genre or platform, we will, first and foremost, be drawn to strong storytelling and memorable characters, the very cornerstones of any compelling and successful content", commented John Weber, CEO of Take 5 Productions.  "We look forward to building exciting relationships with established and emerging voices to develop a robust slate of unique and entertaining content for networks and their audiences in Canada and for markets all around the world."

"For the past few years we have been working with Take 5 Productions to distribute highly successful series," said Berry Meyerowitz, President & CEO of Phase 4 Films.  "We are thrilled to continue this partnership and expand our reach into development.  Coupled with Fred's unparalleled experience and helmed by Brett's strong instincts and relationships within the creative community, we are confident that Take 5 Development will quickly emerge as a leading provider of high quality commercial content within the Canadian and global marketplace."

The new development company will be a writer focused initiative that plans to offer unique partnership opportunities to showrunners and other creative talent.  "As the custodians of the ultimate vision that will drive the projects, we look forward to working with show runners as our creative and financial partners," said Fred Fuchs.

"Take 5 is ideally positioned to begin developing high-end original programming with the enormously talented pool of Canadian creative talent," said Brett Burlock.  Our door is wide open and we are eager to sit down with the best storytellers to find the next great homegrown series to take to the world stage."

Toronto-based Take 5 Productions was founded in 2009 to finance and produce high-quality international television, and quickly established itself as an industry leader.  Led by CEO John Weber, Take 5 is the follow up venture to Dufferin Gate Productions which was successfully sold in 2007.  Over the past 15 years, Weber and his team have produced, serviced or financed over 100 film and television projects. Within the first twelve months of operation for Take 5, the company completed and delivered the final season of the award winning series THE TUDORS.   Building on the success of THE TUDORS, Take 5 successfully co-produced and delivered the first season of THE BORGIAS for Showtime Networks and CTV, followed by delivery of the first season of CAMELOT for Starz Entertainment, G-K Films and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.  As the company continues to build its international slate of production, Take 5 has partnered with Tandem Communications to co-produce the Ken Follett best seller WORLD WITHOUT END. Take 5 is an industry leader in deficit financing with established relationships with major broadcasters and distributors within Canada and throughout the international community.
