Supporters across Canada pressure Immigration Minister Finlay to accept Mr. Laibar Singh on humanitarian grounds

VANCOUVER, Aug. 16 /CNW/ - A national network is demanding that
Immigration Minister Finlay accept Mr. Laibar Singh on humanitarian and
compassionate grounds days before his deportation on August 20th.
Mr. Singh is a paralyzed Punjabi refugee claimant who was in sanctuary
since July 2007 at an Abbortsford gurudwara. He was arrested this week upon
being hospitalized due to a medical emergency.
A wide variety of organizations and politicians have expressed support
for Mr. Singh to remain on humanitarian and compassionate grounds including MP
Ujjal Dosanjh, MP Sukh Dhaliwal, MP Bill Siksay, MLA Harry Bains, BC Coalition
of People with Disabilities, Hospital Employees Union, and dozens of Sikh
temples. In Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto, supporters are planning local
delegations to highlight the national importance of this issue.
