MONTREAL, Sept. 2 /CNW Telbec/ - LMS Medical Systems (TSX:LMZ), a
healthcare technology company and developer of the CALM(R) patient safety
software suite for obstetrics, today announced that MDAdvantage Insurance
Company of New Jersey will be extending the use of CALM Shoulder Screen(TM) to
its entire base of obstetricians. MDAdvantage is the second largest provider
of medical professional liability insurance in the state of New Jersey.
MDAdvantage will be offering credit on annual malpractice premiums to its
current base of obstetricians and new clients implementing the CALM Shoulder
Screen in their practice.
"In February 2008, MDAdvantage began the first phase of implementation of
the CALM Shoulder Screen with an initial group of obstetricians for a twelve
month assessment period," commented Patricia Costante, Chairman and CEO of
MDAdvantage. "Within three months, the ease of integration of the application
into daily operations and the positive feedback from clinicians regarding the
value of the additional insight provided by CALM Shoulder Screen triggered our
decision to accelerate the roll-out of the technology to our entire base of
insured OBs. This initiative supports the development of a new gold standard
of practice in obstetrical risk management."
Promoting patient safety and best practices in medicine are the
motivating factors behind MDAdvantage's decision to institute a premium
discount. Nationally, statistics continue to reveal a high frequency of
medical malpractice claims that allege permanent birth-related injuries
related to incidents of shoulder dystocia.
"MDAdvantage has a track record of leadership in risk management that
includes proactive and innovative support for its insured physicians," said
Diane Cote, President and CEO of LMS. "Teaming with MDAdvantage and its
physicians provides both companies with an opportunity to promote high
reliability in obstetric results."
CALM Shoulder Screen will assist insured obstetricians with managing the
risks associated with shoulder dystocia. Shoulder dystocia occurs when a
baby's shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pubic bone during childbirth.
It is one of the most feared conditions that can occur during labor and
delivery. Potential injuries can be serious and include brachial plexus
impairment, brain damage and sometimes death.
