TORONTO, Feb. 28 /CNW/ - Toronto students oppose the potential $8 - $22
fare hike on the Post Secondary Student Metro Pass monthly Metropass
being considered by the Toronto Transit Commission on Tuesday, March 1.
"It is unacceptable that the Toronto Transit Commission staff has
recommended that part-time students be excluded from the Post-Secondary
TTC Student Discount program," said Vanessa Hunt, VP Campus Life for
the York Federation of Students.
"Part time students need this discount. They face the same financial
difficulties as full time students, are excluded from provincial loans
systems, and are often taking part time studies simply because they
cannot afford to go full time," said Mohammad Ali Aumeer, President of
the Continuing Education Students' Association of Ryerson.
"Students will be present on Tuesday to ask for the TTC to delay this
decision to have more consultation with Toronto's students," said
Danielle Sandhu, Vice-President, Equity for the University of Toronto
Representatives from part-time and full time student unions will be
attending the meeting on March 1, 2011 to attempt to sway city
councilors against adoption of this recommendation.
