Students applaud expansion of McGuinty's tuition grant eligibility

TORONTO, Nov. 27, 2011 /CNW/ - The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario applauds the recent decision by the provincial government to expand eligibility of the new 30 per cent tuition grant to first-entry program students. First-entry programs are all programs eligible to students with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Previously, the grant excluded first-entry program students in professional programs, such as nursing, physical education and social work, from accessing the grant.

"The expansion of eligibility to all first-entry students for the tuition grant will ensure that more students who need financial relief are assisted," said Sandy Hudson, Ontario Chairperson for the Canadian Federation of Students. "Students are pleased that the government recognizes the need to improve access to education for Ontario's students."

Student representatives from the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario and Minister of Training Colleges and Universities Glenn Murray met on November 15 to discuss the implementation of the grant program in the coming months. One of the many concerns raised by Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario representatives about the new grant program was the exclusion of many students.

"We are happy to see that the new Minister is actively listening to students' concerns about post-secondary education policy in the province," said Krisna Saravanamuttu, Ontario National Executive Representative of the Canadian Federation of Students. "We look forward to working closely with Minister Murray in future to ensure that a 30 per cent tuition fee reduction is implemented across-the-board, for all students."
