Actor Danny Glover pledges support
Where: Holiday Inn on King, 370 King St. W
When: 5 PM, Friday September 14, 2007
What: Hotel workers on brink of strike at Holiday Inn hold press
TORONTO, Sept. 14 /CNW/ - Negotiations broke down yesterday afternoon
between UNITE HERE Local 75 and management of the Holiday Inn near King and
Spadina streets in downtown Toronto, moving the hotel perilously close to a
full blown labour dispute.
This afternoon at 5 pm following an informational picket line, the union
will hold a press conference announcing the support of Danny Glover and an
outreach effort for celebrities, customers and others to pledge to boycott the
Holiday Inn on King at a future date.
Workers at the Holiday Inn on King are seeking to win the same standards
established at over 30 other Toronto hotels in the last two years.
The union's Hotel Workers Rising campaign has achieved significant wage
and benefit increases, reduction in heavy workloads for room attendants and
breakthroughs like an employer subsidized transit pass for hotel workers.
The union charges the hotel's management, the Westmont Hospitality Group,
with trying to split off the Holiday Inn on King negotiations from the rest of
Toronto hotel workers by refusing a common expiration date. "We can only hold
on to the standard if all hotel workers can stick together," explained Althea
Porter, a worker at the Holiday Inn. "Our future depends on our ability to
bargain alongside our brothers and sisters." In the process of purchasing the
Fairmont Royal York, Westmont is poised to become the largest owner and
operator of hotels in the city.
