Stork Craft Announces Consumer Advisory on Cribs

VANCOUVER, Jan. 13 /CNW/ - Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., in keeping
with its commitment to quality and safety, today announced a quality and
safety advisory on cribs manufactured between May 2000 and November 2008.
For the past several months Stork Craft has worked with the US Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada examining the metal
brackets that secure the mattress support system of our Stork Craft branded
cribs. During this examination comprehensive testing was instigated by Stork
Craft at an independent, well known engineering company in the US by two well
recognized experts specializing in crib safety, experts also used by the CPSC
in the past.
The experts tested the Stork Craft cribs to ASTM standards. The cribs, in
particular the brackets, passed. In fact, the experts continued the test
procedure specifically relating to the brackets and determined that not only
did the brackets pass, they were safe to 12 times the ASTM standards. In other
words, it took twelve complete cycles of the ASTM standards until a bracket
broke. The independent experts' results are consistent with testing done by
Stork Craft at its own testing facility.
Out of approximately 4 million brackets in the field the CPSC is aware of
10 incidents of cracked or broken brackets (one similar incident reported to
Health Canada). The consensus of the experts and Stork Craft is that if the
brackets are subject to extraordinary stress during inappropriate assembly,
such as bending brackets back and forth, metal fatigue can occur and weaken
the brackets. The experts conducted additional testing whereupon they
deliberately did not follow the assembly instructions, abused the brackets by
bending them back and forth under significant pressure then tested the crib
brackets to ASTM standards. The crib (brackets) still passed, in fact to 4
times the ASTM standards.
Even though the cribs meet or exceed the ASTM standards Stork Craft has
made a design change (December 2008) to heavier brackets to make the product
the best it can be.
Replacement bracket kits have been made available to consumers at no
