Stikeman Elliott Recognized as One of Canada's Top 100 Employers

TORONTO, Oct. 2 /CNW/ - Stikeman Elliott LLP has been selected as one of
Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2009 in a survey conducted by MediaCorp in
partnership with Maclean's magazine. The annual competition recognizes
employers that are industry leaders in attracting and retaining employees.
"Stikeman Elliott is honoured to be recognized as a Canadian leader for
our achievements in attracting and retaining our firm members," says Pierre A.
Raymond, Stikeman Elliott's Chair and partner in the Montreal office. "Each
and every day the members of our firm give their full commitment to our
clients, and in appreciation of their dedication and talent we strive to be on
the forefront of HR, compensation and benefits, staff camaraderie and
corporate social responsibility, while at the same time providing challenging
and interesting work and best in class training."
Stikeman Elliott was selected as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers
because of a number of innovative internal programs.
"As well as contributing to the communities where our firm members work
and live, Stikeman Elliott has created a number of committees and business
practices to make the office environment supportive of firm members from all
backgrounds and all stages of life," says Raymond.
Stikeman Elliott helps foster a positive atmosphere for members of
diverse communities. Among a number of things which have been implemented is a
unique Hear My Name audio feature on the firm's intranet which helps firm
members be comfortable communicating with each other and a Reflection Room in
the Toronto office which allows firm members to practice their religious
observances during the work day.
Stikeman Elliott provides significant resources to support our women
collectively and to assist with their individual career goals. Specific
leadership/business development initiatives for women include mentorship
programs and skills training focused on helping women lawyers build their
practices. Recognizing the additional challenges new moms face trying to
balance the demands of the office with the needs at home, Stikeman Elliott
offers one-on-one professional transition counselling to help lawyers
returning from maternity leave. Additionally, the firm provides paid maternity
benefits and easily accessible backup child care, as well as advanced remote
access options and after-hours tech support and administrative assistance
available to those working from home.
Stikeman Elliott encourages life-long learning for all firm members, by
way of continuing education courses, skills seminars, on-the-job training in a
multidisciplinary, team-based environment and a variety of other professional
development opportunities. The firm also regularly sends its law students and
young lawyers on secondment to one of its other offices or to work in-house
with clients.
On the environmental front, Stikeman Elliott has established a firm-wide
Green Initiative called Going Green/Virage Vert that is designed to achieve
measurable results in areas such as waste reduction, increased recycling and
energy efficiency, leading to a reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions.
Among other green initiatives, Stikeman Elliott has made double-sided printing
a firm-wide standard setting for all printers and copiers, distributes an
increasing number of reports electronically, encourages the use of
videoconferencing when possible to reduce the need to travel and gives
preference to vendors who demonstrate solid environmental practices.
Encouraging and supporting its firm members' personal passions and
interests in the community, Stikeman Elliott's innovative Community
Involvement Program was built on the principle that firm members should select
causes of interest to them, and in turn, the firm supports their causes. In
the past year since the program was formalized, Stikeman Elliott has seen firm
members in Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver help more than
60 organizations, donate countless personal volunteer hours, often using a
team-based approach, and raise more than $1,000,000 for charitable
organizations in their communities.
