Statement from CropLife Canada re: pesticide poisonings report

TORONTO, June 21 /CNW/ - The following statement is from Dr. Lorne
Hepworth, President of CropLife Canada in response to a report by the David
Suzuki Foundation regarding incidents of pesticide exposure in Canada:
"The pest control products industry has always considered the safe
handling and use of our products to be our top priority, and we share the goal
of doing everything possible to reduce or eliminate altogether incidents of
accidental overexposure.
"Whether they are being used by farmers to protect food crops, by public
health agencies to combat West Nile Virus, or by homeowners to deal with
problem insects, pest control products are important tools. But just as with
other items from pain relievers to cleaning products, they must be used safely
and properly, which is why our industry makes significant investments in
educating people about safe use.
"Our industry's efforts in safety education, combined with aspects of the
new federal Pest Control Products Act, will help further protect Canadians
from accidental overexposure to pesticides. We remain open to all measures
aimed at improving safety while ensuring the availability of these important
tools which help to feed Canadians and protect public health against insects
and disease. In fact, through Canada's regulatory system for pesticides,
incidents, such as pesticide overexposure are required to be reported by
product registrants. Our industry is furthering its commitment to enhancing
this measure by working with government and the medical community to continue
to develop a comprehensive voluntary reporting system for physicians and the
general public."
"CropLife Canada will review the Suzuki Foundation report in further
detail and will respond accordingly."
