Statement by the President of the FCM following the death of Ms. Andrée Boucher, Mayor of Quebec City



    OTTAWA, Aug. 24 /CNW Telbec/ - "I am deeply saddened to hear of the death
today of Ms. Andrée Boucher, Mayor of Quebec City," said FCM President and
Winnipeg City Councillor Gord Steeves.
    "Ms. Boucher was a person of action and passionate about her work. By
becoming involved in municipal politics, she dedicated almost four decades of
her life to serving her fellow citizens."
    "As the first female mayor of Quebec City, Ms. Boucher went on to serve
as a role model and a source of inspiration for an entire generation of women
who have now undertaken to follow in her footsteps and go into municipal
politics."
    "On the eve of the 400th-anniversary celebrations marking the founding of
Quebec City, its residents - along with the entire Canadian community of
municipalities - is in mourning. The loss of Ms. Boucher leaves a deep void."
    "On behalf of myself, the FCM's National Board of Directors and all
municipal elected officials across Canada, I would like to offer my most
sincere condolences to Ms. Boucher's family, her fellow Council members and
all of the residents of Quebec City."
