Statement by NDP Leader Howard Hampton on the passing of June Callwood

TORONTO, April 14 /CNW/ - Today, New Democrats are saddened to learn of
the passing of June Callwood, a truly remarkable woman.
June Callwood was a fighter for equality. A liberator, her words were her
weapon. She left behind a rich legacy as a journalist, writer, and social
Callwood's legacy has many aspects, but the most enduring was her
strength and her humanity. Throughout her life, she fought for equality,
preached courage and she pulled no punches. She was a woman who didn't tell
governments what to do - she went out and did it herself by founding or
helping found more than 50 social organizations.
Callwood motivated us, encouraged us, and inspired us to make our world a
better place.
June Callwood once said in an interview in 2004: "If there is any kind of
message in the way I've lived, it's that we're here to take care of one
another. It was Kurt Vonnegut who said that we're all in this together --
whatever 'this' is. That's how I feel, that we're in it to help one another."
Our thoughts are with June's husband, Trent Frayne, her family and

    Howard Hampton, Leader
    Ontario's NDP
