OTTAWA, Aug. 9 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of
Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and
Non-Status Indians today issued the following statement on International Day
of the World's Indigenous People:
"The International Day of the World's Indigenous People is an opportunity
to join together in celebrating the rich traditions and diverse cultures of
Indigenous people including the Aboriginal peoples of Canada.
As Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal
Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians for Canada, I believe in
pursuing the best opportunities to facilitate and encourage Aboriginal people
to realize their full economic potential - opportunities that will allow their
members to participate more fully in Canada's economy and society.
I invite all Canadians to work towards a strengthened relationship with
Aboriginal peoples to make concrete improvements in their lives.
Making concrete improvements in the lives of Aboriginal peoples has been
the approach that Canada's New Government has taken in the past 18 months. We
have focused on directly improving the quality of life among Aboriginal
peoples in Canada, and progress is being made in the areas of clean drinking
water on-reserve, education, housing, the resolution of specific claims,
economic development and human rights protection for Aboriginal women,
children and families.
Please join me in celebrating the outstanding contributions and
achievements that First Nations people, Métis and Inuit make to Canada."
