Statement by FCM President Steeves on the Government of Canada's decision today to appeal a recent Federal Court ruling ordering Federal Crown corporations to pay their fair share of local property taxes

OTTAWA, Sept. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - "The federal government should do the
right thing and pay its fair share of local taxes. This is not a new issue.
Successive federal governments have shirked their responsibilities as good
corporate citizens.
The choice is clear: The government can pay its fair share of property
taxes and support the communities where it operates, or it can choose to evade
its responsibilities by appealing the Federal Court decision.
Should the Government proceed with this appeal, it will have to explain
to Canadians why local ratepayers should subsidize federal Crown corporations.
In its last Budget, the current Government announced an unprecedented
investment in municipal infrastructure. This makes today's decision
particularly difficult to understand: It is like robbing Peter to pay Paul.
We're calling on the Government of Canada to withdraw its appeal and
abide by the decision of the Federal Court."
