National retailer exceeds goal of diverting one million cartridges away
RICHMOND HILL, ON, April 15 /CNW/ - Thanks a million Canada! STAPLES
Canada has collected 1.3 million used ink and toner cartridges, as part of
their Million Cartridge Challenge.
"We have exceeded our goal - I knew Canadians would respond. They have
helped us surpass our goal," said Staples Canada President, Steve Matyas.
STAPLES Canada started the Million Cartridge Challenge on September 24, 2008,
hoping to divert a million used cartridges from landfills by encouraging
people to drop them off at any STAPLES store to be recycled.
The Million Cartridge Challenge, which surpassed its goal of collecting a
million cartridges before the Earth Day deadline, will continue to collect and
recycle cartridges year-round at STAPLES stores. "We have been recycling
cartridges for ten years and we have never collected this amount before; thank
you, Canada!" continued Matyas.
For every million cartridges Staples recycles, we save 96,000 kg of
aluminum, 400 tonnes of plastic, 10 million litres of oil, and 8,000 cubic
feet of landfill space.
STAPLES Canada not only recycles cartridges, but also rechargeable
batteries and cell phones. On Earth Day, STAPLES will introduce an online
flyer that makes shopping Eco-Easy with more than 2,000 eco-friendly products
available, such as STAPLES' Eco-Friendly Notebook, made from sugar cane waste
(Bagasse) and printed with eco-conscious vegetable- and water-based inks.
STAPLES/Bureau en Gros stores from coast to coast also participate in a Lights
Out initiative to reduce non-essential lighting through June and July. The
Lights Out Program saves significant amounts of energy by reducing the heat
load and making it easier for the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning
(HVAC) systems to cool buildings.
