Square One GO Bus Terminal In Mississauga Gets Parking Lot And Terminal Improvements

195-Space Parking Lot Will Make Commuting More Convenient For GO Riders

TORONTO, Aug. 29 /CNW/ - The Ontario government is building a parking lot
for riders who use the GO Transit Square One Bus Terminal in Mississauga,
Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield and GO Transit Chairman Peter Smith
announced today.
"There has been no GO parking at Square One in the past and we're happy
to be able to provide it," said Cansfield. "More cars in the lots will mean
fewer cars on our roads."
"Putting in a parking lot here just makes sense," said Smith. "This is
our second busiest location in our Highway 407 Bus Rapid Transit corridor, and
it's growing rapidly - providing parking will help us increase ridership."
The parking lot will be located just north of the bus terminal, on both
sides of Station Gate Road, at Centre View Drive. The government invested
about $850,000 in the parking lot, which is expected to open mid-September.
The bus terminal serves about 4,000 riders per day on 325 bus trips, and
will also be improved to include more bus bays with heated shelters, platform
lighting, and sidewalk and roadway improvements. The government is investing
$350,000 to improve the terminal, which is scheduled to be finished
"This is great news for commuters who drive to Square One to catch the GO
Bus," said MPP for Mississauga Centre Harinder Takhar. "This will make the
daily commute far more convenient."
These improvements are part of the McGuinty government's plan to get more
people out of their cars and on to transit. The government has invested
$1.8 billion in GO transit since 2003-04, including more than $457 million in
"Sustainable transportation is a priority for the McGuinty government,"
said Cansfield. "We are putting into place transportation solutions to meet
the needs of commuters."
GO Transit's train and bus service moves more than 48 million riders
annually or about 195,000 passengers on a typical weekday. GO buses make more
than 1,500 trips a day.
