Springsteen's debut at number one inspires HMV to help Daily Bread Food Bank meet its fall food drive targets

TORONTO, Oct. 11 /CNW/ - Bruce Springsteen has a lot to sing about. Not
only is his new album with the E Street Band number one in Canada, his charity
of choice, Daily Bread Food Bank, is benefiting as a result.
When Magic was released last week, HMV Canada President Humphrey Kadaner
predicted that it would be the top selling album in Canada. To mark his
prediction, Kadaner made a personal donation to Daily Bread Food Bank and
promised the donation would double if the album failed to reach the number one
chart position. This week's Nielsen SoundScan report confirms Magic did indeed
debut at number one. Despite this news, HMV Canada confirms that it will
exceed the original pledge and donate an additional $4000 to Daily Bread Food
Bank. The donation comes on the heels of news that the charity is falling
behind on its seasonal targets to help families in need.
"When we found out Daily Bread Food Bank hadn't hit its seasonal target,
we knew our work wasn't done," said Kadaner. "Daily Bread Food Bank has been
Springsteen's charity of choice over the course of his many performances in
Canada and he has consistently encouraged Canadians to lend their support to
families in need. We at HMV can't think of a better tribute to Springsteen's
latest success than to support a charity that is close to his heart."
First week sales of Magic marks the first time in five years that a
Springsteen album has topped the charts and records the highest first week
sales of any Springsteen release since Soundscan's Canadian inception in the
early 90s. Early HMV sales reports indicate nearly 10,000 copies sold by the
retailer. The successful first week of sales is no surprise to Kadaner, who
boldly promised a full refund and personal apology to anyone who bought the CD
and didn't like it. To date, Kadaner is not aware of any dissatisfied
HMV Canada will present the donation on October 15 at 3pm at Daily Bread
Food Bank's Toronto head office. The cheque presentation coincides with
Springsteen and the E Street Band's concert performance in Toronto that
evening. The donation will be made in memory of Terry Magovern, a longtime
friend and faithful working companion of Springsteen who passed away earlier
this year.
