Fittipaldi, known for his smooth style and sense of control on the track,
is one of few drivers to have successfully mastered more than one racing
With Team Lotus in 1972, at the age of 25, Fittipaldi set the then-record
as the youngest driver to win the F1 World Championship. Two years later, he
won the world champion title again with McLaren.
In 1984 he returned from a four year absence to race in the CART Series.
In 1989 with Patrick Racing he had five wins and finished in the top five in
every race he completed, giving him the CART championship.
Among his wins was a dominant performance in the Indianapolis 500 where
he led 158 of 200 laps and won by two laps, but only after a dramatic duel
with Al Unser, Jr. in the closing laps of the race. In 1993 he added a second
Indianapolis 500 victory by taking the lead from defending Formula 1 World
Champion Nigel Mansell.
