Spectacular operation at the Port of Montreal

    MONTREAL, June 2 /CNW Telbec/ - The Bickerdike Basin at the Port of
Montreal was the theatre for a spectacular operation at the start of the
afternoon. A 784 tonne vacuum tower measuring 50.6 metres long, 16.8 metres
wide and 13 metres in diameter was transhipped from a specialized vessel that
came from Spain onto a barge that will bring it to Burns Harbor, Indiana, on
the south shore of Lake Michigan.
    Used by the oil industry to process crude oil, this piece of equipment -
one of the largest ever to transit through the Port of Montreal - was loaded
in Spain onto the M.V. Jumbo Javelin. The Jumbo Javelin is part of the fleet
of 14 heavy lift ships from Netherlands-based Jumbo Shipping, a specialist in
the transportation of non-standard parts.
    The Jumbo Javelin, which can carry loads of up to 1,800 tonnes, has
deadweight of 15,022 tonnes. It is equipped with two 900 tonne cranes, has
3,100 m2 of free deck space for the loads to be carried and can navigate at
speeds of up to 17 knots. The Jumbo Javelin left Avila, Spain on May 22.
    The barge belongs to Canal Barge Company, based in Louisiana. It will be
brought to Burns Harbour by a tugboat from the Ontario company Mckeil Marine.
    The Bickerdike Terminal is operated by the Empire Stevedoring Company.
