    Premier Urges Ontarians To Sign Petition And Stand Up For Fairness

    TORONTO, Sept. 22 /CNW/ -


    Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty asked Ontarians to sign an online
petition urging the federal government to give Ontario a fair shake.
    Premier McGuinty has been asking people to raise the issue of fairness
with federal election candidates. The petition is now available at
www.fairness.ca. Ontarians can let all federal parties know that the province
should keep more of its own money to invest in people and to make Ontario more
    For example, unemployed workers in Ontario get $4,600 less in employment
insurance than they'd get if they lived in another part of Canada. The federal
government has an economic development program for Atlantic Canada, the north,
Quebec and the west -- but there's no program for southern Ontario, where the
manufacturing sector is grappling with global economic challenges.


    "Ontarians believe in the principle of fairness -- it defines who we are
and how we live -- but we also believe that fairness is a two-way street. We
have been fair with our fellow Canadians for 50 years. Today, we are looking
for the same treatment from our federal government," said Ontario Premier
Dalton McGuinty.


    -   Under current federal rules, Ontario transfers $20 billion to other
    -   The Building Canada Fund shortchanges Ontario by $970 million on
        funding for infrastructure projects.
    -   Federal health care money is supposed to be divided equally among all
        Canadians, but Ontario is shortchanged by nearly $800 million a year.
