South Asia Floods: Source Available for Comment

    Latest on Monsoon Floods Impact on Children and Disaster Response Efforts

    TORONTO, Aug. 6 /CNW/ - Emergency aid and relief workers from the
international development organization Plan (formerly known as Foster Parents
Plan) have been dispatched to impacted regions of India and Bangladesh to
provide immediate assistance and undertake a needs assessment following
monsoon induced floods across the region. The Network for Information,
Response and Preparedness Activities on Disaster (NIRAPAD) reports that a
population of 7.58 million have been marooned as a result of these floods and
at least 120 are confirmed dead. This is expected to rise sharply as drinking
water is in scarce supply and there are fears of an outbreak of water-borne

    Plan Canada is accepting donations in support of the South Asia floods
relief effort. Canadians wishing to contribute are urged to make donations at

    Emrul Hasan, Policy Advisor for Bangladesh for Plan International is
available for comment on the current situation, disaster relief efforts and
emergency response for the region, as well as what can be expected of this
developing crisis.
