Sobeys Takes Lead as Presenting Sponsor of The Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Halifax

HALIFAX, June 24 /CNW/ - The IWK and QEII Foundations today announced
that Sobeys has pledged its support as presenting sponsor of The Weekend to
End Breast Cancer, which makes its debut in Atlantic Canada on August 15 to
17, 2008. Participants will embark on a two-day, 60-km walk through
Halifax-area neighbourhoods - to raise funds in support of the establishment
of a breast health centre in Halifax.
"Breast cancer knows no boundaries and affects the lives of far too many
women and their families," said Bill McEwan, President and CEO, Sobeys Inc.
"On behalf of our customers, employees, friends and loved ones, Sobeys is
joining forces with the Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Atlantic Canada to
advance the fight to end this disease."
As part of Sobeys sponsorship, all Sobeys stores in Nova Scotia will host
fundraising activities throughout the summer with 100 per cent of net proceeds
supporting The Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Details of additional sponsorship
campaign initiatives will be unveiled throughout July and August.
The Honourable Constance Glube, former Chief Justice of the Province of
Nova Scotia and current chair of the Board of Trustees at the QEII Foundation,
is thrilled with Sobeys' decision to become involved with The Weekend to End
Breast Cancer. "Sobeys has a deep and well respected reputation for giving
back to its communities," said Ms. Glube. "Speaking on behalf of QEII and our
partners at the IWK Foundation, we're thrilled to partner with Sobeys and
their employees throughout the region."

The Weekend to End Breast Cancer

The August event marks the first time The Weekend to End Breast Cancer
will occur in Atlantic Canada and builds on successful walks that have been
taking place in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal
since 2003. To date, Weekend walks in other centres across Canada have raised
more than $160 million in funds supporting such initiatives as a $20 million
Breast Cancer Research centre in Toronto, mobile digital screening for rural
sites in Alberta, digital mammography in Vancouver, state of the art breast
cancer labs in Montreal and a ten-fold increase in breast cancer research
funding in many centres.
Net proceeds from The Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Halifax will
directly support the joint initiative of the IWK and Capital Health to advance
Nova Scotia into a new era in the fight to end breast cancer. Funds raised
will be used to help create a world-leading breast health centre that will
focus on prevention, reducing surgery wait times, improving treatment, and
advancing research.
"We need a breast health centre in Halifax," said IWK Foundation
President & CEO, Robbie Shaw. "To achieve this, we need events like The
Weekend to End Breast Cancer, and in turn, events like The Weekend need the
support, spirit and enthusiasm that companies like Sobeys bring to the table.
We couldn't be happier to have them on board."
