Sobeys opens store at SAIT Polytechnic

Marks beginning of new relationship with SAIT

CALGARY, Feb. 27 /CNW/ - Students, faculty and employees living, working
and studying at SAIT Polytechnic have a new place to shop for their groceries
when Sobeys opens a new store on campus tomorrow.
The 3,000 square foot store, the first of its kind for Sobeys in Western
Canada, is a unique combination of basic needs, fresh meat, produce and bakery
items. It also includes fresh, 'grab and go' meals including rotisserie
chicken, pizzas, sandwiches, salads, soups and pasta all made under the
supervision of Store Manager and Chef Steve Matte.
The store opening also marks the beginning of a new relationship between
Sobeys and SAIT Polytechnic. In addition to the store on campus, Sobeys will
use SAIT Polytechnic's Meat Operations & Management program to train employees
for careers in store meat departments. Students in the program will also
supply fresh cut meat for public sale at the Sobeys SAIT store.
Overall, Sobeys looks at their newest store as an opportunity to serve
customers on campus and to participate in campus life to further develop this
unique store.
"With more than 100 years of experience in the retail food business to
draw upon combined with this new venture into the small store format, what
better place to evolve this concept than at a learning institution like SAIT
Polytechnic - a place where Sobeys, the students and the academic staff can
work together and learn from each other," said Gary Kerr, President,
Operations, Sobeys West.
"Sobeys will be a great addition to our campus," said Thomas Soulliere,
SAIT's Director (acting) of Commercial Services. "Students, staff and the
communities surrounding SAIT will benefit from the selection and variety of
services offered at this new Sobeys location."
The store officially opens to the public at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday,
February 28, 2008.
