Sobeys Lights the Way on Creating a More Energy Efficient Nova Scotia

Partners with Efficiency Nova Scotia and AIR MILES in an Effort to Help Nova Scotians
Save Energy and Money

STELLARTON, NS, Sept. 19, 2011 /CNW/ - Sobeys, Efficiency Nova Scotia, and the AIR MILES Reward Program® have announced an innovative and exclusive partnership to help Nova Scotians save energy, money, and build on efforts to green the province.

Starting today and until the end of the year, Sobeys and Efficiency Nova Scotia will reward the retailer's customers with 5 bonus AIR MILES Reward Miles, per bulb, when purchasing Compliments Energy Saving and Philips ENERGY STAR® compact fluorescent light bulbs at all participating Nova Scotia Sobeys stores.

All Nova Scotians are being invited to help make their homes and the province more environmentally efficient by exchanging their old light bulbs with the newer, more efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. In addition to the positive environmental impacts, switching to energy efficient light bulbs can also save residents up to $50 per bulb each year in energy savings.

The promotion complements Sobeys' many sustainability initiatives already underway across the province, aimed at reducing the company's energy consumption.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we are implementing a number of energy-savings initiatives in our stores across Nova Scotia," comments Cindy Stevens, VP Marketing, Sobeys Atlantic. "These initiatives help us reduce our energy consumption and we want to help our customers do the same."

Since 2008, Sobeys has significantly reduced its carbon footprint in Atlantic Canada; comparable to taking more than 3,700 cars off the road. In 2010 alone, Sobeys stores across the Atlantic region reduced their electricity consumption by more than 17 million kWh/year.

"Sobeys' commitment to energy savings in their stores is impressive, and they are leading the way for all Nova Scotians to achieve the energy conservation goals set for the Province," says Allan Crandlemire, CEO of Efficiency Nova Scotia. "The energy re-fits in their stores, combined with the new technology they are using in lighting and refrigeration, are setting the bar high for businesses here. We are proud to partner with them on this initiative that extends the company's commitment to sustainability to their customers as well."

Residents are encouraged to change their bulbs today as the end to daylight savings approaches. A website set up by Efficiency Nova Scotia also provides energy efficient tips:
