TORONTO, March 10 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing to probe the circumstances of a fatal shooting that occurred
shortly before 4:00 a.m. on March 8, 2008 involving the Toronto Police Service
A 42-year-old man was fatally shot during a physical altercation with a
TPS officer inside a pharmacy at the corner of Garden Avenue and Roncesvalles
Avenue. A post mortem examination performed yesterday confirmed that the man
died of a single gunshot wound. The identity of the deceased is not being
released at this point in the investigation.
As part of their investigation, the SIU has designated one subject and
seven witness officers from the TPS. Investigators will be canvassing the area
surrounding the pharmacy today in order to locate witnesses. Forensic
investigators have seized the subject officer's firearm and clothing for
examination. SIU investigators continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
