TORONTO, Feb. 19 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing to probe the circumstances of a fatal shooting that occurred on
February 16, 2008 involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).
Byron Debassige, 28 years of age, was fatally shot during a confrontation
with TPS officers in Oriole Park, in the area of Frobisher Ave. and
As part of their independent investigation, the SIU has designated two
subject and six witness officers from the TPS. SIU investigators are
continuing to interview police and civilian witnesses. They will also be
canvassing the area surrounding the incident scene over the next few days. SIU
investigators continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed this incident, or
who has any information about it, to contact the Unit at 416-622-1957 or

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
