SIU Updates Investigation into Toronto Shooting

    TORONTO, Nov. 1 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal
shooting of an 18-year-old Toronto man in a Toronto park by a Toronto Police
Service (TPS) officer at 9:30 p.m. on October 31, 2007.
    Six field investigators along with four Forensic Identification
Technicians are presently actively involved gathering information to determine
what led up to the shooting.
    At this point one officer has been designated as a subject officer and
eight officers have been designated as witness officers.
    The name of the deceased will not be released at this time pending
notification of next-of-kin.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

    The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates circumstances
involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or
death. Under Section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU
has the authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the
findings of an investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the
Attorney General.
