TORONTO, Sept. 21 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing to examine the circumstances of a police shooting that occurred on
September 19, 2007 involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).
At approximately 1:22 a.m. that morning, TPS officers pursued a car
believed to be connected to a shooting that took place at Winchester and
Sumach Streets. The officers followed the car to Ellesmere Road and
Morningside Avenue, which is where the car collided with guardrail. The
officers were involved in a confrontation with the driver of the car and shots
were fired by the police.
The driver has been identified as 21-year-old Corey Sonier. He was taken
to hospital where he is being treated for a gunshot wound to his arm and a
head injury that is believed to be a result of a gunshot wound. Mr. Sonier
remains in critical condition.
SIU investigators are continuing to appeal for anyone who witnessed this

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
