TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing to probe the circumstances of a single motor vehicle collision that
occurred on August 18, 2007 that has left two men dead.
The driver and a passenger in a Mercedes Benz suffered fatal injuries
when the car left the road and struck a house on Cochrane Road in Hamilton.
The driver has been identified as Sheldon Gladders and the passenger as
Matthew Loyer, both 20 years of age. A third man who was also inside of the
car was taken to hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.
The SIU was notified that shortly before 3:00 a.m. yesterday, a Hamilton
Police Service (HPS) officer in a marked cruiser saw the black Mercedes
traveling eastbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed. The officer
started to pursue the car and followed it as it continued eastbound on
Lawrence Road. A short time later, the car left the road and struck a house.
The SIU is probing the police activity in the circumstances surrounding
the collision. SIU investigators continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
