SIU Updates Collision Investigation in Toronto

    TORONTO, June 4 /CNW/ - On June 3, 2007, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the
17-year-old girl who was involved in Saturday's collision, succumbed to her
injuries and was pronounced dead at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
    The girl was one of two passengers in a taxicab that was struck by an
Acura. The other passenger, 16 years of age, died at the scene. The teen
driving the Acura, 15 years of age, died in hospital on Saturday morning.
    Investigators with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are continuing
to probe the probe the extent of police involvement in the events surrounding
the collision.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
