SIU Investigating Crash in Toronto

    MISSISSAUGA, ON, Aug. 6 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating injuries suffered by a 40 year old male, early yesterday morning
in an incident involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).
    The TPS contacted the SIU on the morning of August 5th, 2009 to report
that TPS officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Richmond Street
and Victoria Street. The vehicle failed to stop and later collided with a
building at 177 Avenue Road, resulting in injuries to the driver.
    The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to
probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.
    SIU investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to
contact the SIU at 416-622-0748.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
