SIU Investigating Crash in Toronto

    MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 16 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has
sent five investigators and two forensic investigators to Toronto to probe the
circumstances of a motor vehicle collision involving a Toronto Police Service
(TPS) police car today.
    The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU at 10:50 a.m. today to
report that at 9:00 a.m. a TPS police car collided with a citizen's motor
vehicle in the area of Dawes Road and Gower Street. The police officer, who
was alone in car, was taken to the Trauma Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital. The
female driver of the other vehicle, who was alone, was taken to Toronto East
General Hospital. She was later transported to the Trauma Unit at Sunnybrook
    SIU investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to
contact the SIU at 416-622-0748.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
