TORONTO, Nov. 6 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman on Highway
17 east of Thunder Bay late last evening.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) - Thunder Bay, advised the SIU that
at 11:00 p.m., Monday November 5, 2007, two OPP officers responded to an
alleged theft call. They located a female pedestrian on the side of Highway 17
near Sunny Beach Road. A passing motorist struck the female while the officers
were present. The officers were not injured.
The female was taken to Thunder Bay Hospital for treatment. She later
succumbed to her injuries.
This investigation is in its preliminary stages therefore there is no
additional information available at this time.
The SIU has two field investigators, a Forensic Identification Technician
(FIT) and an Accident Reconstructionist on scene to investigate the
circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
