TORONTO, March 28 /CNW/ - Eight investigators including three forensic
identification technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are
probing the circumstances of a shooting that occurred involving the Toronto
Police Service (TPS).
The SIU was notified that at about 8:46 a.m. today, TPS officers were
called to an apartment building at 3460 Keele St. in response to a domestic
dispute during which a female in an apartment was injured. Officers arrived
and became involved in a confrontation with a man, resulting in the man being
fatally shot. The man's identity is not being released pending notification of
next of kin.
SIU investigators are examining the circumstances of the police shooting.
As part of the SIU probe, investigators will be processing the scene,
canvassing the apartment building, interviewing police and civilian witnesses
and making officer designations.
No further details are available at this point in the investigation. The
lead investigator will be making another statement at the scene at 3:00 p.m.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
