SIU Investigates Shooting in Scarborough

    TORONTO, March 1 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing
the circumstances of a shooting that occurred involving the Toronto Police
Service (TPS). The shooting took place at about 2:40 p.m. today at
3227 Eglinton Avenue East in Scarborough.
    Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that at
approximately 2:14 p.m., two TPS officers responded to an unknown trouble call
at a store in Markington Square Plaza. The officers arrived and became
involved in an altercation with a 24-year-old male customer. Two additional
officers arrived to assist. The confrontation between the police officers and
the man continued and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck
in the chest area and transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is
in stable condition and his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening
at this time.
    Two officers were also taken to hospital for non-life threatening
    SIU forensic identification technicians are continuing to process the
scene and interviews with civilian witnesses are also ongoing.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
