TORONTO, Nov. 21 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a man by a
Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) officer on Ottawa St in Kitchener
The WRPS advised the SIU that at 9:38 p.m., Tuesday November 20, 2007,
two uniformed officers responded to a report of a robbery at the Shopper's
Drug Mart on Ottawa St. When the officers arrived they became involved in an
altercation with a male. One of the officers discharged their service pistol,
which resulted in the male being shot.
EMS responded to the scene and the male was taken to hospital by
ambulance where he later succumbed to his injuries.
This investigation is in its preliminary stages, therefore there is no
additional information available at this time.
The SIU has assigned five field investigators and three forensic
identification technicians to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates circumstances
involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or
death. Under Section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU
has the authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the
