TORONTO, Jan. 24 /CNW/ - Eight investigators, including three forensic
identification investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are
probing the circumstances surrounding a police shooting involving the Hamilton
The SIU was notified that on Friday, January 23, 2009 at approximately
9:04 PM a robbery occurred at the Tim Horton's at Stone Church Road and Upper
James Street. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle that they abandoned in
the area of Elcho Street and Wycliffe Avenue. There was a confrontation with
police in which shots were fired. One of the male persons was taken to the
Hamilton General Hospital and is being treated for a non-life threatening
gunshot wound. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
