TORONTO, Sept. 19 /CNW/ - A team of investigators from the Special
Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the events of an incident that occurred
earlier this morning in the area of Morningside Avenue and Ellesmere Road.
This incident started at approximately 1:22 a.m. when Toronto Police
Service officers responded to an armed robbery call in the area of Winchester
and Sumach Streets. At approximately 1:31 a.m., an officer located the car
believed to be involved in the robbery and followed it northbound on Yonge
Numerous officers pursued the green Ford Tempo as it traveled eastbound
on Highway 401 to Morningside. The pursuit continued onto Ellesmere and ended
when the Ford Tempo collided with a guardrail.
One of the men in the car ran into a nearby park and was arrested a short
time later. He has been identified as 20-year-old Darren Wickens. The other
man remained inside the car. His identify has not been confirmed.
Seven officers approached the car. There was a confrontation between the
officers and the man inside of the car and shots were fired by the police.
Toronto's Emergency Task Force unit arrived and officers eventually removed
the man from the car.
The man was suffering from a serious head injury and was taken to
hospital where he is in critical condition. Investigators have not yet been
able to confirm with doctors the nature of the injury and how it was caused.
Mr. Wickens was also taken to the hospital. He has been released with no

The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates circumstances
involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or
death. Under Section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU
has the authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the
