SIU Investigates Ottawa Injury

<location>TORONTO</location>, <chron>Oct. 2</chron> /CNW/ - Seven investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are in <location>Ottawa</location> today to probe the circumstances of a man's serious injury.  <p>The SIU was notified that at approximately 4:42 a.m., a man broke into the First National Bank on Rideau Street. Ottawa Police Service (OPS) officers arrived and chased the man to Daly Avenue. There was an altercation involving the man, a bystander and the officers and the man was struck by a police cruiser. He was taken to Ottawa Civic Hospital where he is receiving treatment for back injuries.</p>
<p>The SIU investigation is continuing. There is no further information available at this time.</p>
<p>The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.</p>
