TORONTO, June 13 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking
into the death of an off-duty Peel Regional Police officer in Wellington
The body of the 41 year-old off-duty police officer was found in his
personal vehicle around 4:30 a.m. this date.
The vehicle was found by officers of the Waterloo Regional Police in a
laneway in a remote area near Wellington County Road 34 and 35 near Cambridge
north of Highway 401.
The SIU investigation will determine the circumstances and sequence of
events leading up to the death.
There is no police investigation with regard to suspects in this case.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
