SIU Investigates Multi-Vehicle Collision in Toronto

TORONTO, June 2 /CNW/ - Twelve investigators from the Special
Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred
Saturday morning at approximately 2:05 a.m., that has left two people dead and
one critically injured.
The SIU was notified that Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers responded
to a gun call early this morning. Officers were patrolling the area of
Islington and Albion Road to find the involved suspects. While they were
there, the officers noticed a blue Acura traveling north on Islington at a
high rate of speed. Officers in two marked cruisers started to follow the
Acura. At the intersection of Islington and Finch, the Acura struck two taxis
which were traveling eastbound on Finch.
There were two females in one of the taxicabs. One of them was pronounced
dead at the scene and the other is at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with
life threatening injuries. The male driver of the Acura was the sole occupant
in the car. He was also taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:47
a.m. Neither of the cab drivers suffered any serious injuries.
It is not clear at this stage in the investigation whether the driver of
the Acura was involved in the gun call.
The SIU is probing the extent of police involvement in the events
surrounding the collision. SIU investigators have designated two subject
officers and 5 witness officers and are working to confirm the identities of
the two females and the driver of the Acura. The area around the intersection
of Islington and Finch remains closed.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any
information to call the SIU at 416-622-1898 or 1-800-787-8529 x1898.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
