SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Sarnia

    TORONTO, March 7 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances of a fatal police shooting that occurred
involving the Sarnia Police Service (SPS).
    The SIU was notified that at approximately 4:20 a.m. this morning, a
35-year-old man left the Bluewater Health hospital in Sarnia. The man
reportedly broke into a home on George Street and barricaded himself in the
basement. Several SPS officers, including members of the Emergency Response
Team, responded to the home.
    At approximately 8:20 a.m., the man left the home and stole a vehicle.
There was a confrontation between the man and the police at the corner of
Russell and Bright Streets. One officer fired his gun and struck the man who
was inside the car.
    The man was transported to hospital where he died. His identity will not
be released at this time.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

    The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates circumstances
involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or
death. Under Section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU
has the authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the
findings of an investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the
Attorney General.
