SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Hamilton

    TORONTO, April 6 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing
the circumstances of a fatal police shooting that occurred involving the
Hamilton Police Service (HPS). The shooting occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m.
this morning at 225 Parkdale Avenue North in Hamilton.
    The SIU was notified that the Hamilton Police received an emergency call
for assistance from the owner of M & J Billiards and Video. The owner called
to report that a man had entered his store and struck him with an axe. Two
officers responded and found the man outside the front of the store. A
confrontation ensued between the three of them and the officers fired their
guns. The man was struck and taken to Hamilton General Hospital where he was
pronounced dead.
    There is no further information available at this time. An update will be
provided later today.
    SIU investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
