TORONTO, Aug. 18 /CNW/ - Eight investigators from the Special
Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating a single motor vehicle collision
that occurred early this morning in the area of Lawrence and Cochrane Roads in
The SIU was notified that at approximately 2:56 a.m., a Hamilton Police
Service (HPS) officer in a marked cruiser saw the driver of a black Mercedes
reportedly speeding eastbound on Main Street. The officer started to pursue
the car and followed it as it traveled eastbound on Lawrence Road. A short
time later, the car left the roadway near Cochrane Road and struck a house.
There were three men inside of the Mercedes. Two of the men suffered
fatal injuries and died at the scene. The third man is at Hamilton General
Hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The SIU is probing the police activity in the circumstances surrounding
the collision. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
